Therapists for college students near New York, NY
It is both normal for us humans to get stuck, scared, or in our own way and also to need space and support to understand the cause of our struggles, face our fears, make changes, and grow. My goal as a therapist is to use our combined wisdom (your knowledge of yourself and your life, my experience and expertise), and sometimes that of my therapy dog Bella, to explore your concerns, increase awareness, insight, and self-compassion, identify options for change, and understand and respect what you choose to do as a result of this process. I have over 20 years experience as a psychotherapist and specifically working with university students (and staff), international persons, and musicians/performers.
I have years of experience working with folks of all ages in various settings towards their mental health and life goals. With curiosity, humor, and compassion, I strive to create a space to explore the oftentimes messy worlds within and around us. I believe we all have an innate profound ability to heal ourselves that can be activated with the right support. I specialize in anxiety, depression, life transitions, establishing/maintaining routines, and supporting those with chronic health challenges primarily - though I have experience with a wide array of life conditions. While the work is often grounded in psychodynamic and CBT approaches, other healing modalities are incorporated as well. You can expect that goals, values, and identities, what makes us-us will be explored, and often guides the process. I welcome any questions you may have, and look forward to hearing from you.
I understand that many seek therapy during very difficult times, times when overwhelming life stressors and transitions begin to interfere with daily life, relationships, or a sense of well-being. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and psychotherapist, I’m here to help adults ages 18 and up develop practical tools and insight so these symptoms no longer dictate how they live. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with patients in overcoming mental health symptoms that impact day-to-day functioning. This includes discomfort in social situations due to anxiety, depression, or low motivation; or seeking treatment because of significant life challenges such as relationship discord, professional stressors and burnout, and loss. No matter the struggle, my goal is to assist in the development of tools and coping skills that help patients better manage emotions. If you relate to these struggles and are ready to hear more, please reach out today. Together, we will build practical tools, insight, and resilience so you can navigate challenges with greater confidence and clarity. I believe a strong collaborative relationship is key to helping you manage symptoms of anxiety and depression and move toward living the life you want. That’s why therapy with me is collaborative, respectful, and focused on creating a space where you feel heard and understood. Our time together is conversational, not clinical; I don’t use a lot of clinical jargon, as I feel that this approach allows for the clearest communication and reduces the presence of a power dynamic. When people ask me why I chose the field of social work and became a therapist, my answer is simple: it just seemed to fit me. My first introduction to social work and psychotherapy was during my second year of college. Of course, I had an interest in psychology, but I’ve also always had a keen curiosity about people and their stories. Social work and psychotherapy certainly allow me to combine those two interests. Still, it wasn't just the course work in those classes that caught my attention – it was the professors. They spoke with compassion about helping others in a way that was authentic and genuine. By the end of those classes, I'd found a profession that allowed me to be my authentic self and still help people. I enjoy live music and spending time at the beach when I’m not with patients. I'm also an avid hockey and baseball fan – go NY Islanders and Mets!

I also have extensive background working with neurodivergent people (ADHD and Autism Spectrum). I am passionate about helping individuals as they navigate life adjustments, such as starting a new job, leaving home, becoming a parent or processing a change in a relationship. I value creating a safe, open, and authentic space for people to learn more about themselves. My approach to therapy is trauma-informed, collaborative and relational. I believe that our experiences throughout our lives impact the way that we see ourselves and our relationships. From this perspective, I work with clients to explore how their life experiences have impacted them. I know that it is difficult to choose a therapist. I start with listening and seek to cultivate a perspective that enlivens, enlightens and unburdens. I use an integrative psychoanalytic approach founded in curiosity and collaboration to address problems relating to trauma, depression, anxiety or self-esteem that can undermine ones ability to thrive interpersonally, creatively, sexually or professionally. Whether it's a life-change, a search for meaning, creative blocks, frustration with the quality of relationships or something else, I will meet you there. Through listening and talking, we will explore internal experience and how it impacts relating to oneself and others. Beyond psychoanalysis. I am also a trained attachment-based EMDR therapist, a powerful modality to process trauma when words don't seem to cut it. I may also use CBT & mindfulness training. These approaches can help develop an ability to detect unhelpful thinking styles, a stronger mind to body connection, and an increased awareness in the present. To give you a chance to practice outside our sessions, I encourage meditation and journaling. With a background in anthropology, I have a special interest in how culture shapes each of us, and always consider the impact of your culture in context with the struggles you face.

Psychotherapy is a profoundly personal and individualized process. It can foster a deeper understanding of self and others, promote healing and resilience, increase coping skills, change behaviors, instill hope, create meaning, and help individuals live their lives in more emotionally honest, authentic, and relationally connected ways. At the heart of the therapeutic process is a collaborative working relationship between therapist and client, and the best outcomes are achieved when there is a feeling of connection and understanding between the two. Continually attending to the fit between therapist and client is important in establishing a relationship that has the strength and ability to explore difficult experiences and the impact of those experiences on clients’ lives. Dr. Kapadia approaches the work with both curiosity and compassion, tailoring the treatment to the individual and using an integrative approach to meet each person’s needs. She draws from a variety of therapeutic orientations, including interpersonal, psychodynamic, family systems, and affect regulation models (cognitive-behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies).
