“Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives.” Healing from trauma is a journey; a journey I would be honored to be on with you. My experience is working with children, adolescents and young adults who may have suffered from a trauma in their life, such as physical, sexual or emotional abuse, domestic violence, chronic illnesses, etc. I work with young adults who struggle with depression, anxiety and transitions in their lives. When working with adolescents and young adults it is also important to incorporate the family in the journey of healing. My approach is holistic with a specialization of trauma. I believe in meeting each client where they are every time they walk through my door. I believe in seeing a person as a whole and finding strengths in every situation. I am passionate about helping clients take control of their lives and feeling empowered. For additional information, please contact me via phone or email. I look forward to talking with you soon!

We work with young adults and adults to help them explore their past, present and futures. We will work together to ensure that you take control over any symptoms that are causing you distress. In a confidential and nonjudgmental space, we will uncover your roadblocks, help you get to know yourself better, determine what you want in life and harness your strengths to achieve those goals.
Life is stressful and distracting enough without putting others' needs above your own. But that’s what we tend to do! As a result, we are left feeling drained. Relationships are complicated – whether it be with yourself or others. Throughout our lifetime relationships are often the most neglected and yet one of the most important. It is through the relationship with yourself and others that personal growth and change develops. This requires looking inward to discover what you need, want, and desire.

My first experience with therapy, was as the client. After surviving a traumatic event, I sought help from a therapist. Therapy proved so helpful, it was then, that my passion grew. While most of my experience has been in private practice providing individual therapy, I have worked in a county mental health clinic, an inpatient psychiatric setting and a residential group home. At the core of distress, we may find some form of unresolved shame, guilt, trauma, abuse or loss. I am here to provide "a safe place" to process those hurts, while helping you increase self-awareness and gain skills to lead a more fulfilling life. As we get to know one another, we will create your goals together. While some people who seek therapy already know what they hope to accomplish, others are completely unsure. Again, there is no right or wrong way to approach therapy. During intake, I will ask you directly what you want and hope for out of therapy. How will you know you are feeling better? Unlike other relationships in our lives, the therapeutic relationship is objective. While our friends and family may do the best they can to help us, they may already have biases regarding how you should live your life. A key component then, is realizing that you will not disappoint me or be judged. I am here to help you be the best version of yourself.
Are you struggling to reach your full potential in college, despite being bright and capable? I help students who know they're smart but face unexpected challenges in their coursework, campus life, or daily routines. I don't just run tests; I take the time to get to know you, understand your academic and personal goals, and create practical solutions that make a real difference in your college experience. Are you tired of "reacting" and not feeling good about yourself? Is your past controlling you in the present in ways that aren't serving you? When we are "hijacked" by our past experiences we lose the ability to "choose" how we want to respond. This affects how we feel physically and emotionally; which can make us feel depressed, anxious, shameful. This in turn impacts the quality of our interpersonal relationships. It doesn't have to be that way. I see therapy as a relational and collaborative process that supports wellbeing on mental, physical and spiritual levels. My approach blends several Somatic and Talk based psychotherapies: EMDR, The Trauma Resiliency Model, Internal Family Systems, Gestalt Psychotherapy, Relational, and several, Mindfulness based awareness techniques which include my many years background in the healing effects of yoga. Each person is an embodied being with pleasant an unpleasant experiences embedded in the flesh and bones and tangled in the mind. My therapeutic work with individuals and couples is to process the unpleasant and build resiliency in support of personal transformation.
I am a family therapist and a certified trauma specialist. I provide comprehensive family, couples and individual therapy. Regardless of the unique nature of what your struggle might be, I begin my work with the provision of a warm, welcoming and respectful environment for my clients. Further information on my professional orientation and qualifications can be found here: https://iwellnessuny.com/about-us/alev-ates-barlas-lfmt/ While validating my clients is central to my work, the safety and assurance of the way I join with them equips me also with an ability to challenge them when needed and give them an opportunity to practice insight, skills and wider range of reactions to their everyday triggers.
